This was a hard assignment for me because I had never used white pencil before. For me the harderst thing was that I could not erase after I had shaded a section.

Practice: (the top one is using the charcoal pencil, the bottom one is using the charcoal stick) Final: Drawing
Ms. Rossi Tanvi Patil:
2. Explain how your knowledge and creating practice studies with value contributed to your piece. The practice studies were very helpful because I had never had experience using charcoal. Both the charcoal pencil and the vine charcoal were very different and the practice studies allowed me to experiment with each. The charcoal pencil allowed for very dark areas. However, the vine charcoal did not have the same range of values as the pencil, but it allowed for a very smooth transition from dark to light. This knowledge led me to use both of the tools in my drawing. 3. Describe the blending and transitions in your fabric (discuss your use of pressure with pencil/colored pencil/charcoal pencil and other techniques to achieve this). In my fabric drawing, pressure was used differently with the charcoal pencil versus the vine stick. I used the charcoal pencil for the darkest areas of the fabric; I learned that I did not need to apply much pressure using the pencil because I had to be careful not to press too hard. I made this mistake a few times and had to lift the value using the kneaded eraser. The charcoal pencil was slightly harder to use because I had to use extremely light pressure when shading the lighter areas of the fabric. The vine charcoal on the other hand was much easier, I used it when blending the areas where light hit the fabric with the folded areas. I used the white charcoal pencil as well as the kneaded eraser to brighten the areas where light was directly hitting the fabric.
My drawing makes my hand look more stuff than it is.If I were to do this assignment again, I would make the hand look softer by rounding the edges more.
I forgot to take a picture of my modified hand (contour) drawing and it's at school. I will upload it tomorrow.
The modified hand drawing was interesting because I looked at my paper a lot more. I feel like the blind contour is more free because you are not too stressed about getting all the lines perfect. However the modified drawing, since you can look at your page, actually is a bit harder in my opinion. This is a contour line drawing of my backpack. I think my proportions are realistic but I had a hard time drawing the folds. Also, the zipper was a bit tricky.
1. Did you use a fluid line? Explain how is this evident?
Yes, although it was hard, I used fluid lines especially when drawing the tables and student's hair. This is evident because when I was drawing the wood pattern from the art tables, I rarely picked up my pencil and that is clear since the pattern is very fluid. 2. Explain how your knowledge and creating practice studies with contour line contributed to the success of your piece. When doing practice with contour line, I learned the importance of covering as much detail as I can while going section by section. I noticed through the practices that each line matters in a contour line drawing since a contour line drawing is all about shape and proportion. Since there is no color or shading, each line is important. I found out that variation of line is hard to achieve. My proportions in the practice were not very accurate and I tried to improve in this piece. During the practice studies, I found out the importance of observation. At first glance, it is hard to get all the details so I had to look at each object in the room very carefully before trying to draw it. I had never done a drawing that covered so much space before, making the practice studies very useful. 3. Describe the difference in your contour line drawing to an outline drawing. An outline does not include very much since (as the name implies) it is only an outline of the subject. This gives the viewer the shape of the subject but does not add value or line weight/variation. Meanwhile, a contour line drawing adds more detail in addition to the shape. Different line techniques can be seen in a contour line drawing; this is what gives the drawing dimension. I prefer contour line drawings because they are much more pleasing to the eye because of the detail and they are very realistic. I find outline drawings to be very basic and do not require very much drawing skill. 4. Explain how your interpretation of line is essential in capturing the look of the room. My interpretation of line is capturing the room because I tried to draw as much detail as I could in the room. I started with the shelves and drew every object on the shelves. I went section by section when observing and drawing the room. When drawing students' hair, I made sure the lines go in the same direction. While drawing the art tables, I made sure to get the wood pattern. I think the wood pattern in my drawing adds to my interpretation of line because it shows detail up close in the room as well as the detail that is further back in the room. 6. What did you learn from completing this drawing? If you could recreate your piece what would you do differently to enhance the final outcome? I learned a lot by completing this drawing. I learned what contour drawings really accomplish which is capturing depth and dimension in addition to just the shape. I had previously thought that contour line drawings and outline drawings were the same, but that is not the case. The most important thing I learned was the true importance of observation. I am used to not observing as close as I should when drawing, but this assignment taught me how observation plays a crucial role in all drawing, but especially in contour line drawings. While completing this drawing, I had to look carefully at each object I was drawing and try to break it down into its core shapes. This concept was new to me because I used to be easily intimidated by drawing something so complected such as a room. Ms. Rossi's advice on breaking everything down to basic shapes will help me with future drawing projects. If I were to recreate my piece, I would spend more time on the people and ceiling to make the proportions better (which in turn makes it look more realistic). I was really intimated when Ms. Rossi told us we had to draw the room. I found it was easier to start in one section and draw all the details in that section before moving on the next part of the room. From my practice contour, I would like to improve the proportions and the ceiling.
This is my animal drawing from the first week. I originally wanted to draw an ostrich but it turned out to look more like an emu.
A blind contour drawing is simply a contour drawing done without looking at the paper and only focusing on the subject. This was hard in the beginning but I definitely improved as we kept practicing. Blind Contour #4 Blind Contour #2
This one, I feel, turned out the best out of all five of them. |
